Several motorcycle drivers have been accosted by the Mati City Traffic Office on Thursday, January 30.

Some of the violators are city government employees since the surprise early morning checkpoint was conducted nearby the City Hall of Mati.

Among the violations cited were driving without a helmet, U-turn violation, counterflow, illegal parking, and no accessories.

The City Traffic Management Office said that as of 2 p.m. Thursday, they have already recorded 70 violators in the vicinity of the Mati City Hall alone.

Other violators from their other checkpoints in Madang and the Poblacion area have not yet been submitted to the CTMO as of Thursday afternoon.

The surprise checkpoint was conducted by the CTMO upon the request of the City Administrator’s Office headed by Atty. Al Aquino.

Aquino reminded all Mati residents of the city government’s policy not to extend help to any driver or passenger injured in an accident while not wearing any helmet.

Republic Act No. 10054 or the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009 penalizes violator of a fine of Php1,500 for the first offense; Php3,000 for the second offense; Php5,000 for the third offense; and Php10,000 plus confiscation of the driver’s license for the fourth and succeeding offenses. (CIO MATI)
