HOPE IS STILL ON FOR MATI’S CITIHOOD

10/29/2009
by Neela G. Duallo

Call it being stubborn, but Mayor Michelle  Rabat admitted that they are stubborn in as far as addressing Mati as a city, despite it’s reversion into a municipality.

In a press conference ushering the 9th Sambuokan Festival and the 106th Araw ng Mati, Mayor Michelle Rabat reported that the citihood case is still very much alive in the Supreme Court, after the League of 16 filed a motion for reconsideration with the earlier decision of the Supreme Court.

“That is why we are now complying all the necessary measures to convince the Dept. of Budget and Management (DBM) to give us back our Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) as a city while the case is still going,” she explained.

Mayor Rabat said that all Matinians have to do now is to unite and pray for this cause.

The local government of Mati has laid the ground works to attain citihood.

“If we have the right tax collection, which can only happen if everybody pays the right taxes on time, and we have to give what is due to the local government, then we are definitely going for it,” she said.

And to show determination to pursue a strengthened tax collection, the local government of Mati launch last week the real property tax computerization program.

"This is to increase our income from real property tax collection, and at the same time, this is for a more effective service, particularly to the taxpayers. As everybody agrees with me, transparancy is the name of the game today for local government units," she explained.

Mayor Rabat revealed that thee could have been more into the computerzation program, like the public market if Mati was not reverted into a municipality.

But she furthered that there is no place for Mati but towards citihood.

“It may not happen next year, or in the next five years, but definitely it will happen for Mati,” she added.

As citihood is the vision and dream of his father, former Mayor Francisco "Paking" Rabat, Mayor Michelle Rabat that uniting mati is the legacy of his father to all Matinians.

"It is not the Baywalk, not the New Public Market, and not even the Centennial Sports Complex, but his legacy is uniting Mati. I learned it from him that in unity, there is political maturity, and in political maturity, there is progress. And as long as I am here, i will not break his legacy," she stressed.
