Baywalk Vendors Attended Basic Food Handlers Orientation

Baywalk Vendors Attended Basic Food Handlers Orientation

Vendors at Baywalk food stalls attended Basic Orientation for Food Handlers conducted on March 26, 2012 at the Pelaez Conference Hall, City of Mati. The said orientation was spearheaded by the Mati Tourism Division and in coordination with the City Health Office. City Health Officer Dr. Ben Hur T. Catbagan and City Tourism Officer Mr. Dashiel Indelible, Jr. also graced the event.

“The purpose of the orientation is to educate our vendors of the importance of sanitation in order to control and/or avoid the spreading of disease-causing bacteria,” says Ms. Nova G. Campos, Sanitary Inspector.

Campos discussed in full detail the origin of food-borne diseases as well as how food preparation can speed up the process of germ multiplication. In order to emphasize her point, Campos showed a short documentary describing all the pertinent aspects of food preparation, high risk groups and the symptoms of food poisoning.

Another guest speaker during the event was Ms. Arlyn M. Andrada who discussed examples of food poisoning. She also explained the dos and don’ts when it comes to food storage, food creation and choice of canned goods.

Attendees were also reminded of the provision of the Sanitary Code of the Philippines pertaining to the health card as a basic requirement prior to the operation of restaurants, food stalls and any other establishments that make money by selling food. Indelible, Jr. gave Baywalk vendors until April 15, 2012 to comply with this basic requirement; otherwise, they will no longer be allowed to sell.

The Basic Orientation for Food Handlers is expected to be only the beginning of a series of activities that aim to promote tourism in the City. Restaurants will be the next attendees of the second food handlers’ orientation.
