CITY OF MATI PUSHES BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION

1/6/2010

Mayor Michelle N. Rabat is undoubtedly bent on pursuing a relentless and aggressive effort for tourism promotion, especially that Mati is now a confirmed component city.

“The richness of our natural resources was reaffirmed when UNICEF Ambassadress Preciosa Soliven visited Mati months ago. She was awed to see the wealth in our biodiversity,” she said.

Rabat explained that though it is the thrust of the city government to promote their tourism potentials, but there is really the need to preserve and conserve Mati’s natural resources.

“I sincerely believe that there is money in conservation. We can definitely promote our tourism attractions, but it does not have to be in a highly commercialized way,” she added.

The City Mayor reiterated that in the city government’s thrust of introducing to the rest of the country and to the whole world what the new city can offer in the tourism aspect, there is no need to destroy the biodiversity of Mati, and that the city government will instead, regulate what it has.

“But of course, this can only materialize with the corresponding legislation from the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Mati,” she explained.

City Vice-Mayor Cesar de Erio also stressed that the august body will now set focus on priority measures that are very relevant with Mati’s confirmation as a component city.

“We will work on the Tourism Code of Mati so that we can already have guidelines in pushing our tourism potentials, and in dealing with the influx of tourists who are expected to come to Mati and discover or see for themselves Mati’s metamorphosis,” he furthered.

And with the start of 2010, Rabat and de Erio are certain that Mati will usher more promise, more certainty for its future.
